DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
As a security first organization, Technology Delivery Services (TDS) is part of the Information Technology (IT) Department. The TDS teams include Information Security, Planning (architecture and PMO), Application Development, HR & Payroll Development, Infrastructure, and Client Services teams. We maintain an innovative, inclusive, and supportive work environment.
POSITION SUMMARY
This position requires AWS Cloud expertise to implement new cloud services, migrate existing on-premise applications to AWS, re-architect/optimize existing cloud workloads, and develop/maintain a strategic cloud roadmap. Cloud Architect will help define the future of UCOP cloud services and grow AWS expertise within IT. This position must be able to utilize AWS cloud to improve University of California systemwide applications impacting more than 200K users. Position will work with teams of IT professionals to provide high quality cloud services, anticipate future needs, and streamline/automate IT processes.

Execution – Avid technologist performs engineering tasks for all components of IT cloud infrastructure while leading a group of cloud engineers and IT professionals.

Subject Matter Expert – Serves as top consultant/engineer setting strategy for cloud security, infrastructure, development, and operations. Leads a team of IT cloud professionals and provides cloud guidance on best practices, standards, and training to teams who develop highly complex systems. Participates in the architecture review of all critical system designs and provides technical guidance in the selection and implementation processes. Recommends strategic transformational cloud solutions for all aspects of IT architecture based on extensive research, proof of concept execution, and successful transition of service operationalization.

Collaboration – Creates a strong culture of teamwork to ensure the quality of daily operations, effective interdepartmental collaborations, and the timely achievement of objectives. Partners with other University of California cloud teams to identify cloud efficiency opportunities and cloud service economies of scale.

Continuous Service Improvement – Proactively tracks cloud trends and new service offerings providing strategic recommendations that improve security, streamline cloud services and/or decrease costs. Ongoing focus on continuous cloud service improvements, well-documented cloud standards, and established cloud framework compliance. Works to fit cloud services into established IT services/processes.
Required Qualifications
At least 10 years IT architect experience, with a minimum of 5 years of that architecture experience in AWS.
Extensive hands-on experience implementing all components and associated best practices for AWS cloud services including security, infrastructure, networking, database, code pipelines and cost optimization.
Advanced infrastructure expertise including development experience (e.g Terraform), systems experience (e.g. AWS, Windows, Linux), security experience (e.g. OWASP, compliance frameworks) and database experience (e.g. RDS, MSSQL, MySQL).
Demonstrated ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds.
Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
Ability to understand business system needs and ability to interpret those needs into optimized cloud solutions. Enterprise-level understanding of and experience with key modeling and description languages used to map highly complex business processes to architectural components, develop common, large-scale data resource architectures, and create reference frameworks.
Significant experience with the integration of highly complex, diverse, internally and externally developed implementations of business functions to build enterprise-class, scalable systems. History of successful implementation of complex AWS or hybrid cloud architecture solutions.
Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels of the organization as well as executive-level management.
Ability to stay current on cloud trends and research new service offerings
Expertise in troubleshooting cloud incidents under time pressure while partnering with a cloud service provider (AWS) and other IT professionals. Experience supporting and troubleshooting in a production server, 24/7, change-managed, multi-platform environment and with cross-platform integration.
Proven understanding of necessary cloud security protocols to protect sensitive data
Experience identifying, setting, and executing cloud roadmaps for migrations from on-premise data centers to AWS as well as optimizing/re-architecting existing cloud solutions.
Ability to influence without direct authority and lead team of cloud engineers to common goals
Demonstrated experience in a lead project role and with project management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Skills in web software, web software language and object oriented software concepts. Knowledge of network protocols and how they are used on a large (campus / medical center / OP-wide, institution-wide or beyond) network.
Advanced knowledge of data storage, processing analysis and visualization technologies and how they are used in administrative and / or academic endeavors at a large, top-tier research university or medical center.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
License/Certifications
AWS Solutions Architect and/or equivalent (Preferred)
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Salary: $170,000 – $195,000 annually commensurate with skills/experience.
