Main Purpose of Role
You will work on initiatives in Cowen’s enterprise-wide global privacy and data governance program to ensure
compliance with privacy regulations globally and provide tools, services and advice to help Cowen manage data.
Key Responsibilities
Work closely with Cowen’s Global Privacy and Data Governance Lead to define the privacy and data governance
program’s strategic approach.
Work globally, but with a particular emphasis on helping Cowen’s European activities, on implementation and
adoption of policies, procedures, assessments, and remedial actions necessary for compliance.
Monitor changes in applicable laws globally to tailor Cowen’s program appropriately.Collaborate with colleagues across the organization’s business divisions to plan and implement operational
components of the Privacy and Data Governance program.
Participate in developing and implementing the program’s communications to engage, educate, and influence
internal leaders about privacy and data-driven issues, policies, and controls.
Assist with development and rollout of training content.Maintain enterprise-wide metrics to measure the effectiveness of the program, including appropriate benchmarks to
legal, regulatory, and industry standards.
Research privacy requirements to aid with provision of privacy-related advice to senior executives.
Participate in privacy breach response operations.
Interact with global (primarily European) privacy regulators as needed to respond to inquiries and demonstrate
compliance.
Work with Cowen’s Global Privacy and Data Governance Lead in initiatives within Cowen’s enterprise-wide data
governance program, including the creation of a data governance operating model defining roles and responsibilities
and governance processes.
Work with Cowen’s Global Privacy and Data Governance Lead on the development and implementation of policies
and processes to ensure effective management and use of data, including compliance with global laws, industry
standards, contracts and other requirements.
Skills / Experience Required
Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of training and experience (JD, Master’s or professional degree
preferred).
Minimum 5 years’ relevant work experience in privacy, regulatory compliance, information systems, information
technology, internal audit, risk & control, fraud, information security, business contingency, and process
improvement disciplines, ideally in the financial services industry. Relevant IAPP certifications or the ability to obtain
certifications within 6 months of accepting the position.
GDPR and European privacy law expertise.Experience with Data Management Body of Knowledge (DMA-DMBOK) preferred.Experience with data modelling, architecting, data analysis, data migration tools, data integration, data warehousing
and database design preferred.
Experience with developing, drafting, and maintaining privacy and data governance polices, processes and
standards.
Demonstrated ability to: quickly develop a command of new concepts, including evolving and new privacy and data
security laws and best practices; and complete multiple and diverse assignments with the highest level of accuracy
and quality.
Excellent project management and prioritization skills.
Demonstrated ability to translate technical, regulatory, and legal requirements into a clear, understandable
framework that is actionable by the business.
Experience in working with a data governance framework.Proficient with data subject rights (especially Right to Erasure, Right to Restrict Processing, Data Subject Access
Requests) and how to address and comply with requests.
