Description : The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a newsroom that’s 1,700 strong and sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

The Team:
Events are an important way to extend the The Times brand and connect with our readers. The New York Times Events team creates powerful expressions of our journalism by convening readers with our best journalists speaking with top figures from the fields of business, politics, entertainment, arts and culture.
The New York Times Events team is an entrepreneurial cross-functional team which creates moments that connect people to the power of Times journalism. Whether it’s a virtual conversation, or a citywide, in-person celebration, the slate of events supports the priorities and goals of The Times: building our brand and advancing our journalism
The Role:
The News Assistant, Events would be part of the events Programming team – supporting the Director of Engagement – to ensure our live journalism is distributed widely, but also to create the avenues for The Times to engage meaningfully with new and existing audiences. This will be a new role, as the Events team integrates its audience development efforts more closely with the rest of the Newsroom, cross-pollinating across a broad spectrum of news desks, with signature NYT newsletters, podcasts, and more. The successful candidate will be detail-oriented, highly organized, collaborative and diplomatic. While supervised by the Director and working with a supportive team, our ideal colleague also demonstrates initiative, creativity and -crucially- an inquisitive desire to learn. We want to bring on a team member who is passionate about using events as a way to strengthen and expand the community of Times readers and preferably has experience working in a news environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Helping events find an audience within the Times ecosystem
Promotion across newsletters, social and articles
Writing copy for those various platforms
Thinking of different ways to produce event content, for example, as social, newsletter or tap story
Build community around Times journalism through events
Conceive of callouts, pre-event chats and other ways to incorporate audience participation and input
Increase user interactivity, and how to stay in conversation with our readers
Turn user-generated content into bursts, explainers, Q&A, lists
Expand outreach to develop event audience base
Research community groups and existing constituencies that might be interested in our event programming
Work closely with Director to draft outreach materials
Track engagement (replies, registrations, RSVPs, and subscriber conversion)
General editorial duties:
Fact-checking
Proof-reading
Qualifications
At least 1 year of experience in journalism; fact-checking and/or text editing for published media strongly preferred
Strong research and writing skills
A passion for news and keen news judgment.
Social media literacy.
The ability to absorb and apply Times standards and styles quickly.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, adherence to deadlines, and time-management.
Hunger to learn, grow and contribute.
Some knowledge of SEO best practices.
Ability to work collaboratively to take direction and to ask questions.
Strong competence with documentation and spreadsheets.
