BBC Studios’ Natural History Unit (NHU) is the leading producer of wildlife programming, creating award-winning content with a world class reputation.
Our output ranges from ambitious landmarks (Seven Worlds, One Planet, Dynasties and the forthcoming Frozen Planet II) to children’s programming (Deadly Dinosaurs and Andy’s Adventures), as well as ground-breaking travel, adventure, formatted, presenter lead and event programming such as Endangered for Discovery, The Year The Earth Changed for Apple TV+ and the BAFTA winning Springwatch for the BBC.
The Development Assistant Producer, NHU Children’s will work to senior development leads, the NHU Kid’s producer and the Head of Development.
They will be focussed on working up factual content ideas for a variety of broadcasters with children’s content, from initial idea through to commission.
We are looking for self-starting candidates who can generate original ideas and write intelligent and surprising treatments. Applicants will ideally have previous development experience which includes writing treatments.
Applicants should have prior experience working in children’s programming and a good knowledge of children’s output
Main Responsibilities
To work as an integral part of the BBC Studios NHU Development team by generating creative ideas, developing innovative forms and researching content that will grip, surprise and entertain both commissioners and audiences.
To help deliver ideas to a high standard which reflect the commissioning priorities of a variety of broadcasters.
Knowledge of domestic and international broadcasters , including all BBC channels, ITV, C4, C5 and digital channels especially those with opportunities for children’s programming.
Maintaining an excellent awareness of commissioner and broadcaster steers and responding to them.
Working to the priorities set by the Head of Development and senior team.
Run brainstorms and where required, use innovative ways to facilitate creative sessions to get the most out of attendees.
Taking a lead role in creating taster tapes.
Take responsibility for delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
Build and maintain relationships with organisations and individuals to both secure access and source ideas.
Help to find and develop new, diverse and relevant on-screen talent for a range of broadcasters.
Working with interactive, short form and social teams to develop multiplatform ideas.
To encourage new and innovative ways of thinking and working.
Are you the right candidate?
A proven track record of writing compelling, eye-catching and editorially robust programme treatments.
Ability to concentrate on several areas of work at one time, prioritising, delivering consistently to deadlines and reacting positively to changes and conflicting priorities.
To be able to suggest and spot strong stories and offer creative and compelling forms and ways of telling these stories.
Excellent scripting, structuring and story-telling skills and strong editorial judgement.
Some production experience, including the ability to self-shoot for tasters would be an advantage.
Graphic design skills, especially inventive use of stills images is desirable but not essential.
An ability to work independently.
Effective planning and organising skills.
Excellent communications skills and experience of working efficiently with senior leads.
A good knowledge of the BBCs Editorial Policy and Health and Safety Guidelines
Ability to deal with complex and sometimes sensitive editorial issues.
An awareness of the importance and potential of multi-platform production.
Knowledge of BBC values.
