Description : ABOUT UNITED FOR RESPECT
United for Respect (UFR) is a multiracial national nonprofit organization organizing people working in retail and fighting for fair, safe, and bold legislative and corporate policies that improve the lives of people who work in the sector. UFR is advancing a movement for an economy where corporations respect working people and support a democracy that allows everyone to live and work in dignity. We are building the 21st Century labor movement and we need a phenomenal state organizer to fight fiercely and implement strategies to win a world where we can all live and work in dignity.
Through strategic communications engagement, innovating digital strategies, scaled leadership development and base-building, UFR’s growing network is challenging major corporations and policymakers to provide family-sustaining jobs for all working people. We leverage technology — social media and our digital platform, WorkIt — and bring the retail workforce into a shared community of support and advocacy.
United for Respect is seeking a California State Organizer to drive and build worker leadership with a scaled activated base for economic and racial justice. Our campaigns focus on raising workplace standards by protecting jobs from Wall Street and automation, winning significant raises, a fair workweek, family leave, earned sick time and equitable workplaces free of sexual harassment and racial discrimination. Key policy initiatives that this position will be responsible for moving in state include, but are not limited to:
The Fair Workweek Initiative (FWI) which is driving the growing momentum to restore a workweek that enables working families to thrive and have input in their weekly schedules. The initiative would create predictable, stable, and transparent schedules and provide access to full time employment. FWI leaders successfully won fair workweek policies in Oregon, Seattle, San Francisco, New York City, Philadelphia, Emeryville, San Jose, and Chicago.
The Future of Workers and Work campaign which has brought together a coalition of non-profits, worker centers and unions to research and base build around the challenges facing California workers such as heavy surveillance to monitor productivity, automation and data collecting, and the expansion to the gig economy and app based work that has impacted worker’s hours and positions.
Paid Leave for All national campaign that aims to provide access, enforcement, job protection, and a progressive wage replacement for all retail workers. The Paid Leave for All coalition is focused on passing a federal policy that will be implemented throughout each state and job sector.
Finding affordable childcare options for low income families create barriers to employment especially for low income women of color. The Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated the issue, forcing parents out of the workforce to care for their children and step into the role of educators during this remote learning period. Affordable childcare options through federal and state funding would alleviate the economic hardships parents face on a day to day basis.
Job Responsibilities:The State Organizer will work as part of the Organizing team at United for Respect. Working in collaboration with the core States Policy Campaign team and the Policy/Political department, the State Organizer will:

Develop and build leadership committees to drive public and corporate policy campaigns through an inclusive process that develops their organizing and advocacy skills, generates bold actions, moves policy makers and educates the public.
Develop the leadership of working people to share their stories with each other and publicly, with the media and online.
Work in collaboration with the policy and political department to build and maintain political relationships with state elected officials, key stakeholders and other state/local policy allies to support campaigns, our members, and core organizing work.
