Description : Job Summary
An unqualified member of the nursing team assisting the trained nursing staff and working to the instruction of the Registered Nurse or Nurse Assistant.
Main Duties
Strip and make unoccupied beds and put away laundry as required.
Give and remove bedpans, urinals, sanichairs and commodes. Observe contents, measure and record, and report any abnormalities to the senior nurse prior to disposal.
Give and change sputum cartons. Observe and report any abnormality to the senior nurse.
Assist with the admission and discharge of residents.
Help the residents wash and care for themselves in all aspects of personal hygiene. Clean dentures and provide and label denture containers if required.
Assist a trained nurse to care for the seriously ill and helpless residents.
Prepare the room and residents for meals. Feed or help residents as appropriate and make comfortable after meal. Bring to the attention of the senior nurse any resident who is having difficulty in taking food or drink. After evening meal use small sweeper in lounges if necessary.
Assist in bathing residents in bed or in the bathroom, including care of hair, hands and feet.
Assist residents getting in and out of bed with dressing and undressing, and with mobilisation as appropriate.
Engage with the residents on a regular basis, by way of conversation, reading, playing board games, grooming hair and nails etc.
Escort residents to and from daily activities.
Chaperone and escort residents as directed.
In accordance with the Nursing Home Policy, assist another member of the nursing staff in checking and listing residents’ property and valuables, and arranging for its safe storage.
Take all reasonable precautions to ensure that residents’ property is safeguarded.
Assist a trained nurse with “last offices” when necessary.
Attend all fire and lifting lectures as directed.
Refer ALL requests for information to the nurse in charge.
Report any incidents or accidents to the RGN so they can complete the relevant forms as required.
Care Assistants should be aware of and work in accordance with correct nursing and Nursing Home Policies.
To agree, carry out and evaluate training programmes appropriate to care staff.
