Description : We are a well-established team of 8 renal dietitians and 1.6 dietetic assistant. An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our large and friendly dietetic team at Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust for a full time Band 3 Renal Dietetic Assistant post.
This is an exciting opportunity to provide a key role in supporting the work of the renal dietitians based at Guy’s Hospital. This will involve reviewing appropriate patients (supervised by a dietitian), and also teaching and audit work. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are required. Proficiency at using Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint are desirable.
Your case-load may include appropriate off-site haemodialysis outpatients so you must be able to travel and may need to work flexible hours (5pm to 8pm) to meet the needs of the service.

JOB SUMMARY: To assist in the nutritional treatment and management of appropriate patients under the supervision of a Renal Dietitian. This will involve conducting nutritional assessments, providing dietary advice for specific patients and carers, and monitoring patients on nutrition support. You will be responsible for an in and out patient caseload and will support the dietitian.

The post holder will be joining a Nutrition & Dietetics Department of over 100 dietitians/staff working across Guy’s, St Thomas,’ the Evelina Children’s Hospital and Lambeth/Southwark community services. The department has a strong commitment to research and teaching.

1. Job Summary
To provide a key role in supporting the work of the Specialist Dietitians in the Renal Unit. This will involve working alone with inpatients and/or outpatients in a community setting, but clinically supervised by a state-registered dietitian. Excellent communication skills are required. The post holder will also undertake teaching and audit work.

1. Duties and Responsibilities
CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITES:
1. Newly admitted in-patients: • Liaising with the ward team to identify new admissions
Ensuring a nutritional screening tool has been completed
Ensuring a food record chart has been completed as appropriate
Ascertaining whether the patient has a need for a modified diet
Prioritising the patients for the dietitian to see
1. Follow-up patients• Regularly review the patient’s nutritional screening tool
To record patient’s weight, appetite and other relevant details as requested by the supervising dietitian
To liaise with the ward house keeper/food service assistant to ensure patients have appropriate menu choices, including ethnic meals
Help with the completion of menus if required
Organise and review nutritional supplements and snacks
Collect and analyse food record charts
1. Management responsibilities for the special dietary food service• Collation of special diet menu sheets on a daily basis and liaise with the diet chef over preparation of special diets
Liaison with representatives from nutritional companies with regard to booking meetings, keeping product information files updated and arranging for pump training for named patients
1. To support the dietitian with discharge planning of patients going home on artificial nutritional support.
2. To support the dietitians in using manual anthropometry to measure body composition. This may be carried out unsupervised after further training.
HEALTH PROMOTION:
1. Health Promotion.
6.1 To assist with the development and implementation of health promotion activities for patients. This will require the ability to develop and use communication and teaching skills to educate our diverse and multicultural population.
6.2 Close working with other health professionals will be required.
AUDIT AND EDUCATIONAL RESPONSIBILITES:
7. To support the dietitians in teaching relevant other health professionals the basic principles of nutritional assessment and nutritional support. This may be carried out unsupervised after further training.
8. To undertake audits of both departmental and trust standards.
9. To help with the production of presentations and posters.
10. To help introduce student dietitians and other new staff to the department.
11. To work as part of the Dietetic Team, participating in developments, attending and participating in relevant staff meetings and CPD meetings.
12. To participate fully in the appraisal process and develop a strategy for continuing professional development encompassing a portfolio based assessment in line with national legislation.
13. To be responsible alongside the feeds clerk for the maintenance of adequate stock levels of feed and supplements.
14. To ensure safe practice taking into account risk management and documentation and reportage of critical incidents as outlined in the trust policy.
15. To keep statistics and written records of all patient contacts in accordance with trust and departmental standards for record keeping.
16. To comply with the Trust’s codes of practice, departmental standards, guidelines and departmental policies, including confidentiality.
17. To be an active team member of the dietetic department at Guy’s and St Thomas’ participating in departmental developments and projects and attending monthly staff and continuing professional development meetings.
18. In consultation with the post holder, undertake any other duties appropriate to the grade as requested by the Principal Dietitian and Dietetic Service Manager.
The post holder is required to follow Trust policies and procedures which are regularly updated.
