The Music Expression team is focused on enabling creative expression through and around music by artists, aspiring creatives, and fans. Our products are used at scale – over 1,000,000 active artists in Spotify for Artists and more than 380,000,000 listeners.
As the Director of Engineering, you will lead teams across a diverse array of exciting technical domains. This includes building low-latency, video and audio intensive mobile features that will innovate future ways that artists can share and express on Spotify and how fans can participate and respond. This is a high-profile and strategic area for the company that will drive user growth and engagement for our core app. Domains of ownership will include mobile, web, backend, data, machine learning and more.

What you’ll do
Build from the ground up (from a team of seven) a new engineering team to own this area, with significant headcount and investment behind you.
Be accountable for the technical vision and long-term strategy for the music expression product lines, including the creator and consumer experiences.
Drive impact through Engineering Managers and Staff Engineers who report to you by promoting sound engineering practices, regularly assessing the technical state of teams, and providing mentoring, coaching and sponsorship.
Ensure our solutions are scalable, balanced, architecturally sound, and that technical debt is incurred consciously and repaid in a reasonable time.
Enable learning and knowledge sharing across the organization, leveling up our engineering practices and mentoring other specialists.
Initiate, influence and drive technical projects across teams within Spotify.
Design and evolve the organization structure based on business needs.
Who you are
You are passionate about technology and what it can do for the music industry and artists
You thrive when developing great people, not just great products
You have a broad engineering background and have deep experience in mobile development on either iOS or Android and experience in media-intensive products.
You are well-versed in data-driven and data-informed product development
You have real-world experience managing engineering teams and have operated successfully as a “leader of leaders”
