Director of Public Engagement
About the Museum
The British Museum is unique in bringing together the cultures of the world under one roof, spanning continents and oceans. No other museum is responsible for collections of the same depth and breadth, beauty, and significance. Its eight million objects allow us to explore the extraordinary diversity of human cultures, from small communities to vast empires, to discover the many forms and expressions human beings have given to every aspect of life, and to realise how closely they are interconnected.
About the role
The Museum’s Rosetta Project is our masterplan for the future development of our Museum and our estate. The Director of Public Engagement will develop the vision and plans for public engagement in support of this ambitious project and other strategic objectives. The role will also be responsible for leading the development and delivery of strategic and innovative programming and public engagement for the Museum.
About you
You will be educated to degree level, ideally with recognised management and or programme management qualifications.
With a proven track record of successful senior level delivery of public programmes for a major cultural institution you will also have demonstrable experience of developing and delivering significant effective strategies and of managing programmes and projects at a senior level.
You will be able to show extensive management experience and a successful track record of building, transforming and developing high performance teams. You will also have a proven ability to lead, influence, negotiate and work collaboratively across a complex organisation.
Being able to demonstrate success in getting people to work together effectively for the benefit of the wider institution will be key, as will a strategic and analytical approach and an ability to show how your excellent judgement has been successfully deployed in your previous roles.
You will be a confident, diplomatic and persuasive communicator with an open and inclusive style which inspires trust. You will also be able to provide evidence of your resilience and resourcefulness in solving problems and proposing solutions.
