The Graphics Director for Opinion leads our efforts to report and visualize information across political, social and cultural themes, often in the service of argument or perspective.
Responsibilities include:
Driving Opinion’s graphic journalism strategy by guiding the development of stories that make smart and innovative use of data and visuals
Managing a team of journalists and graphics specialists to execute the Opinion visual journalism strategy; providing regular feedback and supporting ongoing development
Providing editorial, visual and technical guidance to team members and direct reports
Conceptualizing, reporting, designing and executing data journalism pieces for publication
Guiding the design and technical aspects of visual production and data visualization
Maintaining best journalistic practices for data usage
Collaborating across the Opinion department to explore visual possibilities with other journalists, writers, and columnists
Exploring new visual formats; pursuing fresh approaches to graphical storytelling
This position reports to the Deputy Opinion Editor
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in Media Studies, or related
10 years of experience in graphics or visual journalism
Management experience preferred
Must have experience in/with: data journalism; Data visualization; Graphic presentation; Media and journalism management; Coding: JavaScript, CSS, data analysis languages; and systems knowledge in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
