About the Role
This role will sit within BSI’s Group Sustainability Team whose main purpose is to ensure BSI is exemplar in its own sustainability operations, demonstrating belief in our purpose, standards, and services.
Reporting to the Group Director of Sustainability, the Head of Sustainability Engagement will support the delivery of BSI’s sustainability strategy and be a key player in strengthening the internal sustainability culture. The role will be responsible for engaging both internally and externally in a two-way dialogue to ensure our approach is demonstrating best practice through our partnerships and through engaging and frequent communication. Engaging with local communities is a critical component to our approach and this role will lead the delivery of BSI’s community engagement programme globally.
Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
Develop and deliver an internal and external sustainability communications plan in line with BSI’s sustainability strategy and work closely with internal and external marketing, communications, and PR teams to coordinate content and utilize appropriate communication channels.
Develop high quality and engaging communication and engagement materials to raise awareness of BSI’s sustainability performance, demonstrating alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals
Lead and coordinate BSI’s formal sustainability reporting, including the annual Sustainability Review, sustainability content for the Annual Report and Accounts, the Modern Slavery Statement, UN Global Compact Communication on Progress Reports, the TCFD report, the TNBD report, and other reports as required, ensuring BSI demonstrates best practice and world class reporting.
Maintain the sustainability intranet and website pages with relevant, fresh, and engaging content.
Identify opportunities for positioning BSI visibility in relevant, external sustainability journals, magazines, websites, and events; working with our marketing teams to make the most of these opportunities.
Maintain a dynamic case studies portfolio that demonstrates how BSI enables best practice through its solutions and services, and is an exemplar of best practice in its own operations, and ensure sustainability case studies are communicated both internally and externally through BSI’s communication channels.
Keep under constant review the map of BSI’s stakeholders from a sustainability perspective, engaging with our legal team on its completeness and representation, and track engagement in collaboration with colleagues in marketing and internal communications.
Identify and lead opportunities and innovative ways of engaging with BSI employees globally, with the aim of strengthening the BSI internal sustainability culture and improving performance (e.g. carbon footprint app for employees), working closely with HR and people development teams
Engage with key partners, including the UN Global Compact, making the most of our memberships.
Develop and deliver internal training packages (e.g. employee induction).
Oversee BSI’s global community engagement programme, including the volunteering and charitable donations policies, processes, and budget; by leading the community engagement agenda, ensuring commitment and direction across all BSI operations regions to meet charitable giving targets.
Lead and facilitate global campaigns to engage and inform internal and external stakeholders about sustainability, including but not limited to World Environment Day, a Global Community Day, and global internal sustainability events.
Motivate, inspire, and coordinate the activities of the global Community Engagement Champion network, including the management of charity and volunteering partnerships as appropriate.
Measure the input, output, and impact of BSI’s communication and engagement activities, against a set of KPIs.
Provide sustainability input into business development / bids and client questionnaires (as appropriate).
Highlight opportunities for continuous improvement, innovative solutions, and industry-leading practices.
Support the preparation of papers for the Sustainability Committee and senior stakeholders.
Support the Director of Sustainability and undertake related ad hoc tasks and projects as required.
Qualifications & Requirements
Essential criteria
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Sustainable Business Management, Climate Policy or other relevant, related discipline required. Master’s degree or MBA required.
10+ years of experience working in a large organisation with a focus on sustainability, sustainability training and communications, community engagement and culture.
Expertise in communications and sustainability reporting, including engaging with NGOs and corporate partners.
Experience of running community engagement activities working in partnership with third sector organizations.
Demonstrated experience with, and expertise in, successfully delivering enterprise wide sustainability engagement and reporting programs.
Experience in overseeing, directing, and managing the work of others as a line manager.
Experience working cross functionally with multiple stakeholders.
Ability to enthusiastically engage multiple stakeholders
Possesses creativity and innovative ability to develop content and deliver training.
Ability to work successfully at a quick pace, meeting deadlines and adhering to financial parameters.
Possesses a proactive, dynamic, and results-orientated personality.
Desire to be a strong team player working in an open, transparent, confident, and collaborative manner.
Demonstrated strength in both verbal and written communication skills, including savvy working proficiency of digital media.
Possess a high level of emotional intelligence along with a client-centric and solution-oriented focus.

Desirable Criteria
Fluency in multiple languages strongly preferred.
Current membership and visibility in relevant professional associations related to Sustainability, e.g. IEMA, desired.
