We are recruiting for a Content Editor to ensure Londoners get the hard-hitting political coverage they deserve.
Our site is home to a 10-strong team of Local Democracy Reporters and Political Reporters, covering key political decisions and their impact on everyday lives.
Working alongside MyLondon’s Assistant Editor (local democracy) you will help lead politics coverage across the capital, guiding the team and ensuring councils, TfL, NHS trusts and other public bodies are held to account in a way that’s lively, engaging and relevant.
You’ll also make sure the issues that matter most to London’s diverse population are at the heart of what we do.
Whether it’s finding fresh ways to explain the capital’s housing crisis, crafting powerful human interest features, or helping reporters to get a difficult investigation over the line – we are looking for people who can inspire and motivate a team.
This will be an ideal job for a content editor with a passion for public affairs or an experienced reporter looking to step up into a desk role.
We are looking for someone with an unquenchable drive to make people care and engage with community news.
You’ll also need an excellent set of digital skills, working in a fast-paced environment with the ability to craft strong headlines and social sells – as well as spot and act on analytics trends.
Working at one of the UK’s most exciting news brands, it goes without saying you’ll have a talented team of reporters, editors and digital specialists by your side, along with industry-leading training and development.
You’ll also play a key role in the development of the BBC’s Local News Partnership, working with media groups across the capital to ensure your team’s stories reach the widest possible audience.
Key Responsibilities
Managing the lists and content for nine local democracy reporters, identify key stories and political themes and ensure these are told in an engaging and thought-provoking manner
Provide mentorship, training and development of the team
Edit and publish stories to a high standard, in line with best headline and SEO practice
Ensure we provide an effective and robust service which meets our partner requirements, BBC editorial expectations and impartiality standards.
The Ideal Candidate
Ability to write about politics and local government in an engaging way, removing jargon and identifying key points of audience interest
First-class digital publishing skills and ability to use Escenic competently and quickly
Demonstrable interest and knowledge of local government
Excellent communication skills. This role involves working with multiple newsrooms. The ability to maintain clear and concise communication with colleagues in a fast-paced environment is vital.
Rigorous attention to accuracy – particularly spellings and place names.
Sound knowledge of audience analytics tools
Solid understanding of social media and comfortable using social publishing tools
Up-to-date legal and IPSO code knowledge
About the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
This scheme is designed to increase coverage and scrutiny of councils across the UK.
Funded by the BBC and run by media publishers, reporters who join this service provide in-depth coverage of local authorities which will feature on websites, newspapers and broadcasts across their region.
