This is an outstanding development opportunity for a talented individual who wishes to lead research and education relevant to midwifery and maternity to join our Faculty. This appointee will contribute to a thriving multi-disciplinary department spanning biomedical, clinical, health services and implementation research in the UK and internationally. The post holder will join an established team of academic researchers in the Division of Methodologies led by Professor Glenn Robert working in partnership with the Department of Midwifery led by Dr Sam Bassett and with colleagues in the Department of Women and Children’s Health in the School of Life Course Sciences at King’s. The post is one of ten new posts as a commitment to our Faculty’s future research and education.
The appointee will make a substantive contribution to the academic work of the Faculty and King’s, working with education, research, and clinical teams, with the aim of winning high quality research funding, conducting research at a world-leading level to be published in major academic journals, and delivering inspiring undergraduate and postgraduate education, relevant to midwifery and maternal health care. They will collaborate with existing researchers and educators in the Faculty, across King’s and more widely to apply and explore innovative ways of working with patients, families, and healthcare professionals to improve the quality of maternal care. They will be highly skilled in working in applied health research teams, capable of forging strategic partnerships with a wide range of external collaborators, supervising PhD students and delivering quality education.
The post holder will join the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care (NMPC), a world-leading centre for research, education, and training. Its applied clinical and health research transforms health, quality of life and care across maternity, palliative and end of life care, rehabilitation, nursing and related clinical, health and social sciences. Teams address complex, multi- and interdisciplinary health and social challenges. Our research is carried out locally, nationally and internationally, and globally, supported by NIHR, UKRI, EU and others. Our Faculty has around 3,000 undergraduate, postgraduate taught and research students, with a growing international intake. Our vision is to develop a blueprint for the integration of education and research to improve student experience, transform clinical care and build capability, including in midwifery, and this role is a core part of that vision.
The Faculty has active collaborations with the Institute of Women and Children’s Health (launched 2019) in the School of Life Course Sciences (SoLCS) of King’s College London and King’s Health Partners, making King’s one of the largest centres of research and education in maternal care in Europe. The postholder will collaborate and partner with the vibrant team of clinicians, social scientists, and health service researchers with an international reputation for research and expertise in maternal health care across King’s.
There are excellent opportunities for collaboration and development across King’s, with the close working links with King’s ‘trials unit, and other departments and Faculties, and the extensive academic and researcher development programmes within King’s.
This post will be offered on an indefinite contract contract

Key responsibilities
Lead, contribute to and develop a transformative and sustainable applied health care research programme relevant to the Division and to midwifery / maternal care that delivers high quality research publications and impact to improve care. This will include leading and winning peer review research funding from major funders. It is anticipated that the post-holder will have particular expertise and a track record within one or more of the areas relevant to the methodologies division and / or midwifery department.
Play an active role in the Faculty and King’s undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training, focussed on the programmes within the midwifery department, including module and programme leadership, developing, and delivering high quality innovative education and education materials, including on their/Faculty research expertise and/or findings, and generating excellent student feedback.
Have a clear forward plan for sustaining and enhancing the Faculty research, PhD supervision, and education consistent with the Faculty strategy, including to increase research / evidence informed education and multi- and interdisciplinary endeavours.
Main other responsibilities:
Actively participate in and deliver, and where appropriate lead elements of, the teaching programmes at King’s, and in particular the teaching of the midwifery programmes.
Work in collaboration and partnership with key stakeholders, institutions, and organisations
Contribute to the planning and development of the Faculty’s education programmes and modules, including lecture planning, preparation and scholarship, assessment, and feedback of students’ work.
Act as a Personal tutor, Link Lecturer and Academic Assessor.
Contribute to Curriculum Development and actively participate in team building, peer review and quality improvement initiatives of the Faculty and King’s, and in own development and embracing changes in the field.
Contribute to the academic research of the Faculty, working with colleagues and clinical teams, to win research funding and conduct research at international and world-leading standards, and published in major academic journals.
Supervise, co-supervise and nurture clinical and non-clinical researchers including BSc, MSc/MRes and PhD students to build the field for the future.
Publish research findings in high quality peer view journals, with at least 2 publications that are internationally excellent or world leading by the end of the probation period (3yrs); these can be as co-author.
The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.
Essential criteria for Lecturer & Senior Lecturer posts
1. PhD in a relevant area of maternal health, health service research, epidemiology, midwifery
2. Registerable health professional / midwifery qualification or equivalent
3. Proven methodological expertise in qualitative and/or quantitative health services research methodologies and software, and ability to teach this, appropriate to level (L or SL)
4. Excellent written, verbal and digital communication skills, able to communicate with a wide range of audiences, with diverse levels of knowledge and expertise, and of differing professional backgrounds
5. (SL) Strong track record of sustainable research in a relevant maternal health-related topic (for example, midwifery, maternal health services research, implementation and improvement research, social science, epidemiology, public health), with evidence of delivery to time, to budget and to an excellent standard, as evidenced by research outputs, and record of winning and delivering externally funded/peer review fellowships and grant applications. (L) Evidence of ability to secure research grant funding, demonstrated by previous experience and track record, involvement in research active teams, responsibilities, plans, awareness of funding schemes relevant to Faculty and peer-review publications in areas relevant to Faculty research themes
6. Track record of delivering and developing high quality, relevant teaching and education, including in curriculum development, simulation and digital, remote, or blended learning,
7. Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
8. A flexible, energetic and well organized self-starter able to engage actively with students, team members, the wider College and other potential collaborators in developing a programme of teaching and/or research
9. Commitment to improving equality, diversity and inclusion in the Faculty
Additional essential criteria for Senior Lecturer post
1. CI/PI on at least one current externally funded current grant, or with clearly defined major role within a large programme
2. Supervision of 2 PhD/MD students, mostly as first supervisor
3. Track record of peer-reviewed publications that demonstrate international excellence or are world leading in terms of originality, rigor and significance in areas relevant to Faculty research themes
Additional desirable criteria (Lecturer)
1. Track record in supervising PhD students, MSc students and/or junior researchers
2. Experience in digital, remote, and/or blended learning
3. Commitment to and interest in interdisciplinary and international education and research, including to attract international students.
4. Track record in delivering evidenced impact from their research, with appropriate public and patient engagement.
Additional desirable criteria (Senior Lecturer)
1. Clear forward research programme building on current work in line with Faculty strategy
2. Clear forward plan to expand access to quality education using innovative pedagogical methods
