We’re looking for an experienced, commercially focused, confident, ambitious and driven common law/civil law qualified real estate lawyer to help drive our growth throughout EMEA. This lawyer will be qualified, based in Dubai and will be responsible for negotiating new and renewal leases, hotel management agreements, producing real estate and commercial templates which are consistently at the cutting edge of real estate law and market practices; dealing with hotel operational issues; working on commercial contracts; assisting with corporate governance matters and managing outside counsel throughout EMEA with a particular focus on Dubai and the UAE.
The ideal candidate for this position thrives in taking the lead on driving legal negotiations; consistently developing and improving legal templates; collaborating with commercial business partners; excelling in a fast-paced and dynamic environment; identifying both commercial and legal issues and most importantly, bringing value in the relationships which are formed by being proactive and developing innovative solutions. This lawyer will work closely with the Real Estate teams, City General Managers, the Operations teams, the Public Policy team, the Real Estate Development team, and the Investment Analysis team.

Take the lead on real estate negotiations for UAE markets, from start to finish (i.e., from LOI stage to lease signing and actual operational opening of the Sonder property), working closely with our General Managers and the Real Estate team
Drive legal real estate negotiations and partner with our outside counsel, the Real Estate teams and our General Managers for other EMEA markets to help ensure the best commercial outcome for Sonder
Collaborate with business partners to ensure that all legal related work undertaken is in alignment with the company’s overall mission, messaging and strategy
Identify blockers to Sonder’s growth, consider and develop ideas to eliminate those blockers whilst protecting Sonder’s short, medium- and long-term interests
Seek to “get involved” in legal work throughout EMEA which relates to commercial, corporate, finance or any other legal discipline
Apply lessons learned from former roles into how to improve our templates; how we negotiate our deals and how we deal with all external partners (such as Landlords, agents, brokers, third party vendors such as suppliers of goods and services)
Establish and execute strategies for legal training to business partners throughout EMEA (and occasionally, throughout the Americas)
Develop and maintain strong relationships with business partners through regular catchups and an eagerness to foster such relationships
Proactively identify opportunities to improve on legal processes and templates (and also “speak up” when opportunities are identified to improve on processes used by our business partners)
Manage outside counsel in key markets, whilst seeking to keep outside counsel spend to a minimum
Identify opportunities for internal process improvements and implementing them
Common law/civil law qualified commercial real estate lawyer who also speaks fluent English (to business level proficiency)
Qualified in a top-tier law firm
Arabic language skills are an advantage, as well as work experience in the UAE
Experienced commercial real estate lawyer (both mainstream real estate with an element of corporate support work) with experience in other areas of law (such as commercial and corporate law) is preferred
Hospitality experience is preferred
Extensive experience acting for landlords and/or tenants in the negotiation of commercial leases
Experience in the review of general commercial agreements
Ideally, in-house experience and can demonstrate an ability to obtain value from outside counsel and the proactive management of outside counsel fees
Can demonstrate effective collaboration with stakeholders from a variety of commercial disciplines
Ability to demonstrate how an in-house legal team should be a business partner to stakeholders, as opposed to being “black-letter lawyers”
A desire to work not only within the confines of the law but also commercial concepts and “numbers” (i.e. understands the principles of underwriting real estate deals, basic P&L and basic accounting concepts)
Experience with or strong excitement for a start-up environment
Comfortable working cross-functionally to better understand and support Sonder
An ultimate team player with strong written and verbal communication skills
Self-confident and experienced commercial solicitor who is unafraid of extreme professional growth and challenges
Previous hotel and leisure experience strongly preferred
