Description : To provide highly specialist physiotherapy intervention for own caseload of patients with paediatric musculoskeletal and orthopaedic conditions for all patients (0-17). To assess, treat and manage own caseload using highly specialist knowledge and skills as an autonomous practitioner, including the maintenance of comprehensive records.
To take the lead role in developing the paediatric MSK physiotherapy service across Kings College Hospital. To work within specialist clinics such as Rheumatology and orthopaedic Clubfoot Clinics. To undertake a team leader role, alongside the Clinical Lead/Specialist Physiotherapist in managing, planning and delivering the physiotherapy service for patients with musculoskeletal conditions. To deputise for the Clinical Lead/Specialist Physiotherapist in their absence. To supervise, teach and develop less experienced physiotherapists, physiotherapy assistants, and student physiotherapists. To provide physiotherapy sessions in Primary Care premises as required. To supervise, initiate and participate in evidence-based projects, including recommendations for change in practice and to lead in departmental research and audit in their clinical area.

CLINICAL AND PROFESSIONAL
Patient Care
To be responsible for the efficient, effective and safe management of patients referred to the paediatric MSK service.
To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including the management of patients in your care. To ensure a high standard of clinical practice for patients under your management and to support more junior staff to do likewise
To receive referrals and independently assess and treat own caseload of patients, ensuring evaluation and progression of treatment programmes to a high standard, and in line with National and Trust clinical guidelines, protocols and pathways where they exist
To have clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients, including those with highly complex and diverse conditions, and prioritise that work efficiently taking into account clinical and service priorities, using highly specialist knowledge to underpin decisions To manage clinical risk within own clinical caseload, and within team. To have up to date knowledge of indications, contraindications and precautions for any treatment skills and techniques selected and applied throughout an individual course of treatment.
To formulate and deliver an individual physiotherapy treatment programme based on highly specialist knowledge of current practice, evidence based practice and treatment options, using highly specialist clinical assessment, reasoning skills and recognised outcome measures.

To ensure effective discharge planning within the team, liaising with other members of the MDT as appropriate, including referrers
To provide individual patient equipment as required, , walking aids, splints and supports. To issue such equipment with due regard to safety of the equipment, and in line with legal, national and local guidelines
To deliver physiotherapy in different locations, according to the requirements of the post e.g physiotherapy department, primary care premises. To work in some situations, such as primary care premises, as a lone practitioner.
To advise, guide and teach less experienced physiotherapists, assistants and students in the assessment and management of patients and other aspects of clinical care, including record keeping.
To provide highly specialist advice to physiotherapy colleagues and other members of the MDT regarding musculoskeletal physiotherapy, including advice and recommendations to referrers
To develop new working practices and local guidelines and keep abreast of new techniques in relation to the management of the patients in this specialty particularly in line with any national guidance
To lead on production of clinical guidelines and local policies ensuring evidence-based, implemented and audited.
This post requires a flexible approach to working, and requires the post holder to be an active member of the weekend duty orthopaedic/musculoskeletal rotas, and cover of statutory and public holidays
Communication
To communicate effectively with patients and carers to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes
To be able to persuade and motivate patients through effective communication
To respond appropriately to the patient’s level of communication and understanding, facilitating the best possible communication outcomes. For example, patients may be deaf, blind, or unable to communicate in English
To provide and receive information from patients, carers and other professionals regarding a patients condition and treatment progress. This may include the sharing and receiving of complex and/or sensitive information
To develop and maintain close working relationships with physiotherapy colleagues and other members of the multidisciplinary team. To provide highly specialist advice, teaching and training to other members of the MDT as appropriate, both internal and external to the Trust. To provide recommendations of clinical management and highly specialist advice to the MDT and external organisations.
To ensure that discharge information is communicated to referrers in a timely and appropriate manner, both as an individual, and from within the team
To ensure effective communication within own team e.g. ensuring open lines of communication within the team
To be responsible for local management of informal conflicts, disagreements and complaints
To take an active part in departmental meetings.
To develop best practice at Kings through liaison with other regional specialists and other relevant groups e.g. To effectively liaise and network with colleagues in other Trusts for the benefit of patients and the service

MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION
Information Management
To maintain comprehensive, accurate and timely patient notes and records in accordance with department policy, and to ensure safekeeping and confidentiality of those records
To keep comprehensive records of activity in accordance with local and national requirements, using departmental IT software systems as required
To prioritise referrals received within the musculoskeletal physiotherapy service, using highly specialist knowledge to underpin decisions.
To book appointments for patients in the absence of reception support
To write physiotherapy reports in line with local, trust and national guidelines e.g. legal reports
To use computer skills to support role, including EPR, PIMs, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, e-mail
Human Resource Management
To be responsible for the standard of physiotherapy carried out by a designated physiotherapy team within paediatric musculoskeletal outpatients, including students and assistants
To train, supervise and performance manage a designated physiotherapy team within paediatric musculoskeletal outpatients, including more junior physiotherapists, assistants and students, if appropriate
To have an active role in effective team working in the physiotherapy department, leading, assisting and supporting other team members
To supervise and assist more junior physiotherapists and assistants in maintaining an appropriate casemix and workload
To assist other members of the team to make appropriate priorities, particularly at times of annual, study and sick leave
Physical Resources
To be responsible for Health and Safety requirements within own clinical area
To ensure that the treatment and working areas are kept safe and tidy, and to ensure that any faulty or unsafe equipment is taken out of service and reported for repair
To be aware of the cost/benefit implications in the selection of appropriate equipment to be provided to the patient for long term use, both individually and within the team
To maintain an equipment inventory for own area, and advise the Clinical Lead and Physiotherapy Manager regarding recommendations for new equipment
Service Development
To demonstrate a sound knowledge of Clinical Governance and have an active role in clinical effectiveness and audit programmesin order to develop and improve services, taking the lead role as required e.g. development or introduction of Clinical Guidelines
In liaison with the Clinical Lead, evaluate current practices in own work and that of the team, based on evidence based projects, audits and the use of recognised outcome measures, and to make recommendations for change, including initiating and implementing change
TRAINING, EDUCATION AND RESEARCH
To undertake inservice and post graduate education in order to develop self professionally and improve patient care
To keep abreast of new developments generally within physiotherapy, and within the area of musculoskeletal conditions particularly. To incorporate into current practice and disseminate to other members of staff following discussion with the Clinical Lead Physiotherapist
To contribute to the physiotherapy inservice training programme for staff and students, facilitating learning and providing teaching sessions for seniors, juniors, assistants and students.
To act as a Clinical Educator, providing training and development for students on clinical placement, including written reports, and providing teaching sessions in HEIs as appropriate
To provide education programmes for visitors and members of other disciplines
