Description : The Vertebrate Gene Nomenclature Committee is an extension of the established HGNC project, and is responsible for assigning standardized names to genes in selected vertebrate species.The successful post-holder will be responsible for developing and maintaining the VGNC website using similar templates and frameworks as the HGNC website, developing and extending the HGNC/VGNC REST API and creating other tools and services to expose the data to the public.Your roleThe successful post-holder will be working alongside a team comprising one other full stack developer and 6 curators. They will be responsible for developing and maintaining the VGNC website using similar templates and frameworks as the HGNC website, developing and extending the HGNC/VGNC REST API and creating other tools and services to expose the data to the public. They will also be responsible for developing and maintaining internal web tools, which the VGNC curators and collaborators will use to check and submit data for individual genes and gene groups. A significant part of the role is developing and maintaining the pipelines responsible for mapping cross-references, creating automated nomenclature calls, and exporting the data to the public services.The VGNC project interacts with other resources hosted at the EMBL-EBI, particularly Ensembl and UniProt, and other international organisations and resources, so the post-holder must be confident in liaising with members of these projects. In collaboration with the rest of the VGNC and HGNC team members, the post-holder will be expected to interact with users of the VGNC, answering helpdesk questions and presenting the project at conferences and other meetings.You haveEducated to MSc level (or above) in a computational or related discipline or have a demonstrable equivalent level of experience.Experience writing robust, quality code in a production environment.Experience of implementing development practices such as revision control etc.Experience in web development including using JavaScript frameworks such as Angular and JQuery.Experience in developing APIs that interface with backend databases.Experience in relational databases (MySQL and/or PostgreSQL), programmatic access, schema design and optimisation.Experience in software version control using git, github and gitlab.Knowledge of Unix/Linux.Ability to learn new languages, frameworks and techniques quickly.Attention to detail and ability to problem solve when issues arise.Experienced in Perl development or similar programming language.Good written and verbal communication skills.Team player, as well as an ability to work on problems and development in isolation.You might also haveKnowledge of genetics and molecular biology.Background in bioinformatics.Understanding of the requirements of scientific service delivery.Competency in working on team projects.Experience in construction and use of containers (e.g. Docker)Experience working with cloud computing solutions.Experience with search engine servers (e.g. Solr, Elastic)Ability to articulate complex technical problems to non-specialists.Why join usDo something meaningfulAt EMBL-EBI you can apply your talent and passion to accelerate science and tackle some of humankind’s greatest challenges.
