Now, in this era of fake news and polarisation, and as we proudly enter our 25th year, we’re in the fortunate position of having a proven product and the capital to continue investing in endeavours to support and promote credible, independent and public interest journalism.Learn more about how we operate, our mission, and ethos at https://www.newsnow.co.uk/careers.That’s why we’re expanding and now looking for permanent web developers, who will work on a wide array of exciting UI/UX challenges.About the roleYou will join our highly-experienced and multi-disciplinary product development and engineering team, enhancing the functionality of the website and improving our web codebase and infrastructure through both client-side and server-side development.Our priorities for 2022 and beyond include:Developing our entirely new design – built in Vue – which represents the biggest upgrade to NewsNow’s format in its nearly 25-year history;Evolving into a social news site by crowdsourcing feedback and ratings from users to drive quality and user-centric improvements;Implementing various mobile initiatives, such as the development of a progressive web application (PWA) and push notifications to not only make accessing NewsNow easier, but also put us at the forefront of peoples’ minds at critical moments;Continuing our mission to provide a healthy news diet through publishing headlines linking to breaking and curated news from a diverse range of credible, independent and public interest news sources.You will be expected to contribute authoritatively towards our web development projects, implementing new UI functionality through Vue components (and where necessary in the backend) to a high level of design precision.You will also easily grasp the detail and the “big picture” of systems you come into contact with, and as you learn, you will be able to correctly anticipate the interactions of these systems, particularly given planned modifications to their behaviour.You will be able to engage authoritatively in technical discussions and debates around the specifications of projects: from UI components, state management and APIs, through writing business logic and prototyping.Last but not least, you will also consistently produce high-quality code that is secure, readable and stands the test of time, and which requires relatively few changes when reviewed.At NewsNow, we are highly collaborative, so you’ll also be invited to work closely with other members of our product development and engineering team in conceiving development efforts, researching and specifying planned product enhancements, and reviewing each others’ code.You and your skillsWe want to hear from you if you are confident that you can learn what you need to know quickly and are keen to master new methods and discover new approaches.
