Salary – GA Rate is £17,011 rising in later years subject to satisfactory academic progression and professional performance to £17,901, plus pension, PHI and benefits package.
Job Purpose & key responsibilities:
We are seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated person, with a passion for electronics engineering to join our technical services team within the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society within Heriot Watt University, Scotland, UK. You will work as an Electronics Engineer, learning on the job, whilst also attending Heriot Watt University as part of the Graduate Apprenticeship programme to earn a BEng (Hons) Degree in Engineering: Design & Manufacture over a 4-year period.
You will start the role in spring 2022 and will be expected to enrol on your BEng degree in September 2022. You will attend classes at the University one day a week, whilst working the remaining four days within the School where you will contribute to the development and testing of scientific instrumentation and laboratory products. Key activities of this role include:
Assembly and testing of prototype PCBs, wiring harnesses and devices.
Component selection, schematic capture and PCB layout.
Testing and debugging of electronics.
Writing technical documentation.
Qualifications & Experience:
Please note this job is aligned with attending University to gain a degree whilst in employment. It is a condition of employment that you are accepted onto the Engineering: Design and Manufacture (EDM) GA programme. Applicants must meet the Degree course entry requirements as follows;
Year 1 – 96 SCQF credits at level 6, for example:
4 SQA Highers at Grade B or above, including Mathematics plus Physics or similar;
3 A Levels at Grades BBC, including Mathematics plus Physics or similar;
SQA HNC in an engineering discipline (or a suitable Modern/Technical Apprenticeship) with Engineering Mathematics 1 & 2 (or equivalent).
Foundation Apprenticeship in Engineering in conjunction with 3 SQA Highers at Grade BBB including Mathematics.
Year 2 entry may be possible for candidates with SQA Advanced Highers, A-Levels at ABB grades or SQA HND, for the aforementioned academic subjects.
Desirable, but not essential:
Experience in the use of Microsoft office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
Experience of practical electronics skills such as soldering and wire crimping.
Experience in programming or scripting.
Experience in using basic electronics test equipment such as a digital multi-meter.
An understanding of LabVIEW
Personal attributes:
Good written and verbal communication skills, able to work as part of a team.
Keen to learn with a desire to develop your own knowledge and experience.
A methodical, and detail-oriented mind-set with a passion for solving technical problems.
