Global Congress Strategy Director
The Global Specialty Care Therapy Area (SC TA) is a cornerstone of the GSK Pharmaceuticals business that is focused on establishing and building a strong commercial portfolio in new and existing therapy areas. The strategic priority of the SC TA is to create a specialty portfolio of medicines with a focus on immunology for the treatment of a range of chronic and acute conditions.
The role:
As Global Congress Strategy Director, you will be required to successfully develop and deliver GSK’s commercial presence at external medical congresses to support brand/asset, disease, business and company priorities. This is a key role, working in close collaboration and partnership between the commercial and medical teams, with a common purpose to deliver the overall congress strategy for the SC TA. You will provide strategic thought leadership and be the execution link between the SC TA / key global business unit teams and the external events, based on your deep expertise in the congress area. Through strong partnerships with the SC TA and global business units, you will deliver on strategic priorities through one of the most high-profile channels of interactions with customers. Success will be the delivery of the SC TA’ congress strategic plan whether in ‘live’, virtual or hybrid environments with positive feedback given by internal/external customers and partners.
Key Responsibilities:
In conjunction with the Medical External Engagement Director, co-chairs the congress steering group (or equivalent) to lead on defining, planning and implementing the TA congress strategy and plans for individual congresses to meet business objectives
Includes providing guidance and recommendations of the role congresses can play to achieving strategic objectives and customer engagement
Tracks, influences, recommends and challenges appropriate spend of budgets for commercial on congresses within SC TA / global business unit team (based on expertise) and facilitates corresponding agreement on milestones and deliverables for each congress to achieve optimal congress presence
Establishes and manages effective relationships with external professional societies and negotiates the best arrangements
Works with brand/asset teams to co-create and develop the strategic plan for major congresses including determining any above brand/asset activities required. This includes working with external agencies, internal commercial and medical teams, local teams, following the appropriate approval processes from medical and compliance.
Ensures a high-quality customer experience is defined before, during and after the major congresses to demonstrate GSK leadership and strong position within the therapy areas.
Provides thought leadership in defining and executing congress plans that take place in a range of settings, i.e. congresses held in person/face-to-face, virtually and/or a mixture of the two.
Leads on the planning, development and execution of global events working in partnership with brand/asset leads which are in line with all compliance, SOPs (including Scientific Engagement), GSK standards and Local Operating Company standards and identifies / works to resolve any specific challenges / issues with plans (e.g. activities outside EFPIA and GSK Scientific Engagement principles)
Project manages GSK’s presence at international congresses to ensure successful on-site delivery by collaborating with a variety of business partners and stakeholders (including GSK Pharma, GSK LOCs, Meetings CoE, etc.)
Acts as the recognised expert to GSK stakeholders involved in congress activities and leads on a range of activities in conjunction with brand/asset leads including – booth design and implementation of GSK collateral, housing, registration, logistics, organisation of pre-congress briefings and other congress meetings, internal communications, reporting TOVs to US HCOs, necessary due diligence on third parties, After Action Review post congress, etc.
Manages the relationship with i) third party vendors and agencies to ensure all necessary contracts are negotiated and in place, they are compliant with the relevant code of practice requirements, and they deliver at or above expectations at events; ii) Congress Organisers and Scientific Associations so that GSK is best positioned for sponsorship and attendance (this includes endorsement of the GSK ways of working, i.e. HCP engagement, etc.)
Acts as trusted business partner for Global Specialty Care and drives continuous improvement by introducing innovative ideas and identifying better ways to creatively streamline events and congresses (especially under budget constraints) and align congresses as part of the broader multi-channel strategy
Ensures master files are maintained, congress measurements / metrics are completed, and documentation is collected for the quarterly compliance reporting reviews, and keeps stakeholders updated on procedures to ensure congresses are delivered in an ethical and compliant manner
Leads ad-hoc Global Specialty Care priority projects as required and agreed by the leadership team and line manager via objectives year on year

Post qualification experience in congress, conference and events management within the Pharmaceutical Industry (agency and / or corporate experience)

Knowledge of therapy area associated with the role, market place and pharmaceutical compliance guidelines
Prior leadership experience and business/commercial acumen
Excellent organization and project management skills with strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize
Strong team player and ability to work effectively with various teams / individuals in a matrix environment to achieve business and personal objectives
Personally driven and able to work well autonomously
Customer-oriented with strong client / customer facing skills
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong professional relationships both internally and externally
Strong skills in managing, influencing and negotiating with external partners (e.g. agencies, speakers, etc.)
Ability to deal with ambiguity and manage through changes to get the best results
Budget management skills with aim to always provide best value
Ability to provide strategic thinking and challenge to business partners and influence where appropriate
Willingness to travel regularly on an international level and comfortable working in a global, multicultural environment
Fluency in English language, spoken and written, additional languages are an asset
Preferred Qualifications:
