Description : Main Purpose of the Post
We are seeking a highly talented and enthusiastic post-doctoral research scientist who will be based in the Institute of Life Science that hosts a wide range of research activity in state-of-the-art facilities on the Singleton Campus of Swansea University. They will support research activity that forms part of the NERC ‘Future Clean Air Strategies’ funding scheme, through the Relating environment-use Scenarios in Pregnancy/Infanthood and Resulting airborne-material Exposures to child health outcomes (RESPIRE) project. The post holder will carry out research focussed on elucidating the mechanisms that underpin the relationship between maternal exposures to indoor air pollution in pregnancy and the programming of organ development and later disease in childhood. Pregnant women have a unique position in our efforts to understand and mitigate the vulnerability of the fetus and infant to the ill-effects of air pollution that include long-term respiratory, neurodevelopmental, cardiovascular and metabolic dysfunction. The post holder will work with human tissues especially nasal epithelial cells, placental macrophages and blood monocytes to elaborate the toxicological and/or inflammatory effects of various air pollutants on the phenotype and function of cell populations within the respiratory tract, blood and placenta. They will also oversee the ethical and research governance aspects associated with the human participant-based research and work collaboratively with consortium partners across all four member nations of the United Kingdom.
Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant subject and experience of research delivery, writing papers and supporting students. Excellent laboratory skills related to epithelial and/or monocyte/macrophage analysis are essential and must include cell/tissue culture of primary human material as well as knowledge of handling clinical samples and the associated data, as well as the ethics/governance issues relating to clinical research. Laboratory experience must include single-plex and multi-plex analysis of protein and/or gene expression using immunohistochemistry/RNAscope, confocal microscopy or other imaging techniques, flow cytometry, quantitative PCR and/or transcriptomics, and immunoblotting. The post holder will be expected to take a lead in writing high quality publications. Excellent project and time management skills, and the ability to solve complex problems are necessary.
