Description : We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist to join the team. This could be a band 6 looking to progress to a Band 7 post, or a Band 7 looking to develop skills in a new area.
Previous wheelchair service experience is not required but a clinical background in either neurology, paediatrics or community work would allow you to utilise transferable skills. Development of knowledge in the equipment used will be well supported by the senior clinical and engineering team. A position with the team offers an opportunity to develop your clinical skills in all areas of postural and mobility assessments and related equipment prescription. A flexible but organised approach is required to meet the varied needs of the client group. The service is provided to paediatric and adult clients. Clinicians within the Wheelchair Service are responsible for the assessment and prescription of paediatric buggies, standard and active user wheelchairs, specialist wheelchairs, powered wheelchairs, associated postural seating and custom made seating.
We are an innovative and dynamic team that can support your training needs through our in-service training programme and attendance of relevant external courses.
To work as part of the multi-disciplinary team to provide a high quality clinical wheelchair service, incorporating detailed assessment, measurement, fitting and review of patients based on current good practice and evidence based seating principles.
Provide supervision to OT/PT students and staff members which may be a band 6 therapist, static or rotational, or overseeing the work of a new band 7 therapist.
To take the lead on designated projects that will help improve service delivery.

The Wheelchair Service provides a comprehensive wheelchair, posture and seating service to the local population of Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham and deliver high class service to the residents of these boroughs. The service is based in Crystal Palace and has a maintenance service based in Bermondsey.
The Service is a dynamic multi-disciplinary team made up of Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Rehabilitation Engineers, Technical Instructors and Administrators.The Wheelchairs Service is unique in that we manufacture our own customised seating and undertake speciality controls assessments. The service is part of the Regional Rehabilitation Centre and work very closely with the Assistive Communication Service, Prosthetics and Orthotics Services.
Clinical & Professional• To receive, process and action referrals from GPs, AHP’s or clients / carers ensuring effective caseload management.
To consider the needs of each person holistically and identify when they require further health and social intervention and make referrals as appropriate.
To carry out visits to other places that are associated with the client, including day care, hospitals, and schools.
To be responsible for comprehensive and expert assessment of clients with complex mobility and postural seating needs, to enhance quality of life and prevent the development of fixed postural deformity and associated health risks, liaising appropriately with Rehabilitation Engineers.
To apply a high level of understanding of the effect of disability, monitor, evaluate and modify treatment for clients, as appropriate.
To communicate highly complex clinical information effectively to ensure collaborative working with colleagues across health, social care and the voluntary sectors to ensure the delivery of a co-ordinated interdisciplinary service.
To monitor equipment that is on temporary loan for clinical assessment and to make recommendations or changes to the equipment where appropriate.
To take a lead in co-ordinating the prescription and handover of equipment, including liaison with external equipment suppliers and Rehabilitation Engineers to ensure provision in a timely fashion. This will include undertaking specific individualised adjustments and the training for clients, carers and support staff.
To maintain an up to date awareness of new developments and change in trends with Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy.
To maintain an up to date awareness of new developments and changing trends in postural and mobility services.
Participate in ongoing research, development of and trial of new equipment and theories of practise.
To work autonomously in the management of all clinical work but to be accountable to the clinical lead.
Be able to identify deterioration in progressive conditions and plan effective prescription of equipment.
Identify risks associated with prescription of equipment, environment and manual handling procedures. Make recommendations to relevant services such as social services or community therapists. Liaise with Rehabilitation Engineer’s where required, particularly regarding medical devices.
To independently communicate highly complex and sensitive information in an understandable form to clients, carers and other staff, including on occasion sharing information that the client may find difficult to receive.
To be innovative in planning workload and dealing with financial pressures including thinking laterally and looking at joint funding ventures.
To have an understanding of how the client pathway works to ensure a seamless client experience.
1. Administrative
To ensure that appropriate client needs are met within the wheelchair service resources.
Extensive liaison with community and hospital services in the provision of therapeutic services. E.G. Developmental centres, schools, adult therapy teams, spinal units, hospital and community therapists and social services.
Liaise with internal and external therapy teams in organisational and professional matters concerning the therapeutic aspects of the wheelchair service.
Make best use of the services communication networks.
To ensure that up to date written and electronic records and activity data are maintained in accordance with Professional and Trust standards.
Provide specialist professional reports as required.
To make optimum use of the resources available for the wheelchair service within budgetary requirements.
To complete necessary statistics.
To liaise with, and feedback to, Rehabilitation Engineers any design problems, or broken and faulty equipment.
To participate in clinical audits, policies and procedures.
To participate in the operational planning and implementation of policy and service development within team, leading on delegated projects as designated by the Wheelchair Service Clinical Lead / Deputy Head of Specialist Regional Rehabilitation Services.
Work closely with the administration team on appointment booking, completion of specifications and timely arrival of goods.
Work closely with Wheelchair Service Clinical Lead / Deputy Head of Specialist Regional Rehabilitation Services around budget, service provision, service development and planning.
Adhere to risk management policies.
To be involved in the recruitment of members of the multidisciplinary team, including Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Technical Instructors and Administrators.
Delegate as appropriate, clinical and administrative tasks to Technical Instructors, administration staff and junior therapists.
3. Training• To maintain professional competence to practice and develop and maintain professional skills.
To comply with the COT/CSP Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and national and local policies and procedures.
To contribute to the induction/ training of students and other staff both within practise setting and within the Trust.
To provide appropriate fieldwork placements for Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy students, independently liaising with the fieldwork co-ordinator and educational establishments.
To provide supervision of Band 6 Occupational Therapists / Physiotherapist and/or Technical Instructors.
Demonstrate the ability to review and reflect on own practise and performance through use of professional and operational supervision and appraisal. Includes use of CPD.
Apply specialist skills and knowledge in order to establish professional competence and fitness to practise as a senior Occupational Therapist / Physiotherapist.
To develop specialist skills and knowledge through attendance of specialist courses, showing an application of acquired knowledge and skills in practise.
Attend and contribute to relevant meetings and groups.
Be responsible for tasks relevant to Band 7 post e.g. development of policies and procedures, leadership of therapy team within practice setting.
To provide relevant in-service training to other health care professionals.
To participate in audit projects, disseminating findings at local level.
To broaden research and development skills through participation in local audit and research projects.
To present at regional and national training events.
4. Quality Assurance
Help to implement, then follow, monitor and develop the quality assurance and inspection procedures for orthoses supplied to the Trust, in close cooperation with the Rehabilitation Engineer.
Advise on the quality and suitability of goods received.
5. Service Delivery
Ensure the service is delivered in a timely, appropriate and cost effective manner.
6. Research
To contribute to, propose and assist in the running of research projects, in line with the Trust’s policy on research.
Ensure the service is kept up to date with current developments in the field of Posture and mobility and other relevant subjects.
Assist with lectures and/or organise training in the field of posture and mobility for staff within the department and the Trust as a whole, including students where appropriate.
