Description : An exciting opportunity has been created for a full stack software developer to work on the development of the ChEBI database (https://www.ebi.ac.uk/chebi/), which contains detailed information on small molecule compounds in biology. ChEBI is a very widely used resource, with a growing user base numbered in the hundreds of thousands and with millions of accesses every year. In addition, ChEBI provides molecular data to many of the key global biological databases upon which researchers in the biosciences are increasingly reliant. We recently received funding from the BBSRC to rewrite and improve the software and data infrastructure of ChEBI so that it can continue to fulfil this critical role in the future. This “new ChEBI” will be developed using modern software technologies, making it easier to support, and will be more flexible, efficient and sustainable.You will be based in the Chemical Biology Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) and will closely with other members of the team, together with other groups at EMBL-EBI and collaborators as required.Your roleThis is a unique and exciting opportunity to work on a significant and widely-used software resource. In this role, you will.Develop key elements of the “new ChEBI” database and resource including the REST web services, the new web interface, a unified annotation tool and data export pipelinesInteract with key users of ChEBI at EMBL-EBI and our global collaborators to actively solicit feedback as the project progressesBe an active member of the chemical biology team of software engineers, curators and scientistsInteract with the wider ChEBI user community, for example at events such as workshops and conferencesContribute to the broader goals of the team and EMBL-EBI in developing resources for the scientific communityYou haveA post-graduate qualification or equivalent in Information Technology, Computer Science, Bioinformatics or a related disciplineProficiency using a command line UNIX/Linux environmentA strong command of Python, preferably using DjangoExperience with RESTful API developmentProficiency with relational databases such as PostgreSQLFamiliarity with search engines such as ElasticSearchExperience of the full software development cycle including design, implementation, testing, version control and deploymentExperience developing web interfaces with modern frameworks such as Vue.jsWillingness to learn new skills as the project requiresSelf-motivation and the ability to work both independently and as part of a teamExcellent communication, interpersonal and English language skillsIn addition to having relevant software engineering and programming skills you will need to have excellent attention to detail, good communication skills and be able to interact not only with other software engineers but also with ChEBI’s many users.You might also haveExperience working with Docker and KubernetesKnowledge of cheminformatics methods and toolkits (e.g. RDKit)Prior experience working in a multidisciplinary scientific environmentExperience creating and managing complex data processing pipelinesWhy join usDo something meaningfulAt EMBL-EBI you can apply your talent and passion to accelerate science and tackle some of humankind’s greatest challenges.
