The Isle of Wight NHS Trust are on a journey of ‘Getting to Good’, as part of that journey we are launching a search for dynamic, motivated, visionary Geriatricians to help construct and develop a completely new and innovative department of Medicine for Older People.
These appointments mark the start of our journey to create the very best department in the UK, serving our local population of older people, ensuring that they get the very highest quality care within their places of residence, through acute medical pathways and access to specialist departments and resources when appropriate.
This is a unique, exciting opportunity to build a department from its very foundations and will require you to work collaboratively as a team, working alongside our two established geriatricians, the wider multidisciplinary teams, specialist colleagues and the operational team. As one of the only true integrated trusts in the UK we are looking for people who have experience working across traditional health and social care boundaries. More recently we have started to form a formal partnership with Portsmouth NHS trust and are extending our working with Portsmouth University. These key relationships will provide successful candidates with opportunities for NHS and academic sessions ‘across the water’.
Our island population:
We presently have an over 65s population that is 50% higher than that of mainland England and Wales (27.3% cf 18.2%).
In the next 5-10 years the island population will increase from 140,000 to 147,000 with a predicted reduction in
Significant numbers of our older population live in isolation, have multi-morbidity, will need additional social care provision to continue to live independently in their own homes across the island.

The posts are designed to be as flexible as possible and less than whole time working and job shares will be encouraged and supported. Personal and professional development in sub-specialty interests will be keenly supported, and every new appointment will be given a local mentor to guide their transition to Island living and working. Assistance with moving to the island, accommodation, property purchase, and school searches will be offered to all successful candidates.
