Members of the VMware Global Government Relations and Public Policy change how governments think about technology, and its impact on citizens. The team works at all levels of governments across the world and is connected to a sophisticated and competitive software business, helping VMware to become the modern, multi-cloud SaaS company.
In this role, you will be key to enabling the Global Government Relations team to realize its core deliverables and support the overall mission. You will conduct critical research and analysis of the global legislative and policy landscape, write timely and clear communications for key stakeholders inside our business, and prepare, organize, and execute materials and documents that facilitate the team’s work.
In addition to your active and central role on the global team, you will be exposed to trailblazing technology, global policy trends, people and tools that will broaden your depth and understanding of the workings of government, and multiple opportunities for professional development and growth.
Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work towards completing?
You will work in concert with all members of the Government Relations and Public Policy team, though your location to Washington, DC will put you in closest proximity to the team’s US Federal efforts. Our team practices a collaborative, creative, and results-oriented approach with four focused deliverables: 1) promote and protect business priorities; 2) impact public policy; 3) create thought leadership; and 4) build relationships between VMware leaders and senior policy makers. Your performance goals will be closely associated with the team’s overall deliverables.
A broad understanding of the legislative process and the role and operations of government agencies will enable you to best support the team. The position requires the ability to closely follow government activity in real-time, analyze and appreciate specific impacts on VMware and its products, and communicate those issues succinctly to the Government Relations team, and broader company, in a timely fashion. An interest in global politics and an understanding of multiple government political and legislative systems are desired and will contribute to your success. A candidate with strong analytical and writing skills, who can work in a fast-paced environment, will thrive in this role. You will also be required to creatively problem-solve for assignments and issues being dealt with by the broader team.

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?
Types of work you will be doing:
Research and Analysis of Policy, Legislation, and Policymakers
Tracking and monitoring of government activity related to: multi-cloud software, digital infrastructure, 5G and telecommunications, cybersecurity, modern app development, remote work enabling technologies, blockchain, AI, and privacy, among others issues
Following the work of legislative committees and government agencies
Researching the legislative priorities of specific legislative committees and policymakers to understand their approach to VMware-related issues and potential motivations and interests
Engaging with the Government Relations’ teams external consultants and trade associations to utilize their expertise and analysis in support of the business
Analyzing specific legislative vehicles with a direct impact on VMware, with an eye towards the team deliverables
Communication of Critical Policy and Legislative Issues
Drafting, editing, and overall production of regular (monthly, weekly, and event-specific) communications to the business detailing government activity that impacts VMware
Real-time communication of the Government Relations’ team’s analysis of policy developments as they are happening to relevant stakeholders both internal and external
Collaborating with the team and business to produce VMware perspectives and talking points on relevant policy and legislative issues
Document Production
Preparing materials and memoranda used to brief VMware executives in support of their interactions with policymakers and government officials
Crafting of documents used by Government Relations team members to communicate critical policy perspectives to government officials and their staffs
Management of collateral generated by team, with specific focus on fact-checking and updating to most recent developments
Project Management and Tracking of Deliverables
Managing the end-to-end process used to produce and accurate and timely communications between Government Relations and the broader VMware business
Organizational and project-management support of specific team initiatives, such as high-level executive meetings with policy makers, and efforts to influence legislative language
Facilitating internal tracking and record keeping of team activity – specifically, managing the strategy, process, and procedures used by the team to track their relationships with public officials
Synthesizing and reporting-out on the work of the Government Relations team to the broader business
Supporting the team’s use of research and tracking tools including but not limited to: Bloomberg Government, Politico Pro, National Journal, MultiState, Quorum, Congress.gov
Managing, mentoring, and collaborating with Government Relations interns

The hiring manager for this role is Vice President of Global Government Relations and Public Policy, who has built this team from the ground up and has successfully and effectively executed a comprehensive government relations strategy in key markets across the globe. The Vice President’s management philosophy is about trusting the talent on our team. All team members are encouraged to ask questions, collaborate with colleagues, trust their expertise, and explore their curiosities about our company’s and industry’s work.
You will be managed primarily by the Vice President of Global Government Relations and Public Policy, though you will closely collaborate with all team members in support of their work. The team values collaboration, open communication, asking any and all questions, and a desire to dig deeper into our core mission. Broadly, the Global Government Relations and Public team is comprised of professionals across the world, in the United States, Europe, and Asia-Pacific, many with years of experience in the government and public sectors. The team is part of the Legal Department at VMware led by VMware’s General Counsel and Executive Vice President.
