The Role
The Head of L&D will be a highly knowledgeable and capable HR professional with real lived experience at a Head of level, taking full responsibility for Learning, Development and Leadership programme design and implementation. You should be used to working at a senior level and partnering with Board level and Senior Leadership Teams and be able to align both business and functional requirements across the talent spectrum to deliver relevant skills for the business today and for future growth and expansion opportunities.
The Remit
The Head of L&D’s first order is to understand the business, its goals and priorities, to begin building talent strategies that work towards this.
Duties and Responsibilities
Identifying the organisation’s needs and in particular future skills to create and implement an effective development strategy – improving just in time succession planning to drive improvements in business performance
Managing and motivating a highly skilled team to assist with talent development including the design and implementation of fit for purpose processes and digital solutions
Designing and implementing Leadership Programmes from middle Management to Board Level Pinnacle programmes Including coaching and mentoring.
Organising and overseeing individual and team blended development programmes including the design of Team development days and team performance programmes
Leading the further development of entry schemes and the 18-24 youth strategy including achievement of D, E and I objectives.
Developing and implementing an experiential learning platform and have experience of already having delivered this elsewhere
Developing and implementing colleague retention programmes or strategies
Understanding workforce planning and resource forecasting
Developing effective strategies for identifying skills gaps within the workforce
Understanding the current recruitment trends and your organisation’s markets to identify the impact upon the business
Anticipating the organisation’s future and working with senior executives to advise on recruiting tactics that will help to sustain the company’s success
Developing and implementing strategies to attract diverse candidates to all areas of the business
Managing and delivering reports and data when required
Personal Skills and Qualities
As Head of L&D, it goes without saying that you will need to be a highly skilled HR professional with experience of talent development and resourcing. However, you will also need to be strategic, influential and confident in building relationships with colleagues at all levels. You will need a commercial mindset and to be analytical in your approach. Strong communication and leadership skills are a must.
Key skills and personal qualities required are:
A real passion for talent and enabling people to be the best they can be
Experience of managing a team with a strong understanding of talent acquisition, management and development
Ability to be strategic and yet tactical and pragmatic when making decisions
Great interpersonal and motivational skills
Experienced in digitisation of Learning and experiential learning platforms
Analytical and able to interpret and present data aligned to improving business performance and better cost management
Brilliant at influencing colleagues at all levels to support your strategies
Familiar with performance management, career management and succession management and relevant supporting technology, and able to make suggestions for enhancement
Experience delivering blended development programmes
Understanding of labour legislation
Ability to use the relevant Human Resources tools
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Required Qualifications
Bachelors or Masters degree in Human Resources or relevant field
Industry-recognised qualification, such as CIPD. These include:
Level 5 Diploma in Human Resource Management
Level 5 Certificate in Human Resource Management
Level 5 Diploma in Applied Human Resources
Level 5 Award in Human Resources
Level 7 Diploma in Human Resource Management
Level 7 Certificate in Human Resources

Base Location
The base location for this role is flexible. We’re happy for someone to split their time between home and Head Office. This can be discussed further at interview stage.
